*** Researchers at Ohio State University have come up with some rather unsettling news… 2/3rd’s of the linemen on a Division I college football team are obese and more likely than other players to have health problems. 90 players at the university were studied and 19 of the 29 linemen were found to be obese, or having at least 25% body fat.
* 13 had insulin resistance, which means their bodies don’t regulate sugar properly which can lead to type 2 diabetes.
* 8 had metabolic syndrome-risk factors that can damage the heart and also had unhealthy readings in at least 3 of these 5 categories: blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL or good cholesterol , abdominal fat and blood sugars.

*** A new study published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family’s found low income women still get into romantic relationships, despite a general feeling of distrust towards men. Experts found 96% of low-income mothers who participated in the study didn’t trust men due to experiences with uncertainty and poverty and histories of domestic violence or sexual abuse. The authors believe that reducing the use of alternative forms of trust (e.g., misplaced) would allow women to spend time in intimate relationships that are more likely to lead to strong, lasting, healthy marriages.

*** Researchers at University of Chicago, University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and Monash University in Australia say people often set their personal moral compasses according to what they presume to be God’s standards. Their 7 separate studies of Boston rail commuters, University of Chicago undergraduates and a nationally representative U.S. database of online respondents had participants report their own belief about an issue, their estimated God’s belief, along with others, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Major League Baseball’s Barry Bonds, former President George W. Bush and an average American.
Other studies had participants to write and deliver a speech that supported or opposed the death penalty in front of a video camera. Their beliefs were surveyed both before and after the speech.
The final study showed brain scan data demonstrated reasoning about God’s beliefs activated many of the same regions that become active when people reasoned about their own beliefs.

Brad Niesluchowski, information technology chief for the Higley Unified School District, allegedly downloaded a copy of a University of California-Berkeley program called “SETI@home” to every computer in the school district…without the board’s approval.
The software allows individual computer users to scan data and signals from radio telescopes to look for signals from outer space and turns on and runs whenever a computer’s idle. Cops searched Niesluchowski’s home and found 18 computers allegedly stolen from the district. School officials estimate damages, energy usage and equipment losses linked to Niesluchowski could top $1.2 million.

*** A man accused of breaking into a home in Florida to take a shower told kids who arrived home that US President Obama let him into the house. Donald Leon May, 48, of St. Petersburg, Fla., entered the home through the unlocked back door Nov. 18 and started to take a shower, when 2 teens returned home with a friend and one of residents entered the bathroom, thinking it was their father in the shower. The male in the shower said ‘Obama let him in’” and told the boy “get out.” The kids called the cops from a neighbour’s house and the suspect was arrested wearing nothing but a “towel wrapped around his lower body.”
*** A patron of the “World’s Largest Disco” told Buffalo police he was beaten at the event Saturday night by 5 men. The man was treated in Buffalo General Hospital for facial injuries after the 11 p. m. attack at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The unidentified man told police he accidentally bumped into another man and caused him to spill his beer. He said the man whose beer was spilled and 4 buddies then began punching and kicking him.

*** A U.S. judge’s dismissed a defamation lawsuit against The Dixie Chicks over comments they made about the murders of 3- 8 year old boys in Arkansas in 1993. Teens Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin were convicted of murdering Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore near their West Memphis homes.
Echols was sentenced to death, while Misskelley and Baldwin are currently serving life sentences. Since their convictions, more evidence’s been unfolded casting doubt on whether the trio committed the crimes – and attracting the interest of several celebrity supporters.
Winona Ryder hosted a special art exhibition of Echols’ work and 2benefit albums have been released, including the music of Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, Joe Strummer and Henry Rollins.

*** A U.S. judge’s dismissed a defamation lawsuit against The Dixie Chicks over comments they made about the murders of 3- 8 year old boys in Arkansas in 1993. Teens Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin were convicted of murdering Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore near their West Memphis homes.
Echols was sentenced to death, while Misskelley and Baldwin are currently serving life sentences. Since their convictions, more evidence’s been unfolded casting doubt on whether the trio committed the crimes – and attracting the interest of several celebrity supporters.

*** Johnny Depp will receive BIFF’s highest honour, the Career Achievement Award at the 2009 Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) in Nassau. *** 4 suspects linked to high profile raids on the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Rachael Bilson and Orlando Bloom pleaded not guilty to felony burglary counts Wednesday in LA court. 19 year-olds Nicholas Prugo, Diana Tamayo and Courtney Leigh Ames, and 27-year-old Roy Lopez Jr. entered pleas through their lawyers. Prugo faces 7 counts of 1St-degree burglary for break-ins at celebrity homes including those of Lohan, Bloom, Bilson and Paris Hilton. 18-year-old gang suspect Alexis Neiers will stand trial for looting Bloom’s property, after Prugo identified her on a security video entering the star’s Hollywood Hills home.
*** Filmmaker Roman Polanski will get out of jail Friday on $4.5 million bail after being behind bars since his September 26th arrest on an outstanding 31 year US warrant for having unlawful sex with a 13 year old girl. Swiss justice officials announced Wednesday Polanski can move to his Gstaad chalet at 1 p.m. on Friday. Under the terms of the bail, Polanski, 76, will have his phone calls monitored and will wear a tracking device while he remains under house arrest.
